VIETNAM. At Least Two Major New Ports by 2030

11/01/2021

Facing a somewhat inadequate port infrastructure, the country counts 34 ports but none of “international standard” stature and capacity, the Transport Ministry of Vietnam vows on invest around 150-200 trillion dongs ($6.4-8.6 billion) over the next 10 years to develop new ports, improve connectivity with other transport infrastructure and reduce logistics costs. Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Nhat wants to give priority to the northern city of Hai Phong, the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau and the central economic zone in order to meet demand for burgeoning export in Vietnam, which many see as an alternative to the Made in China. If and when achieved, the plan could double the country’s sea-born shipping capacity from about than 690 million tons of cargo in 2020 (+4% vs 2019), to 1.14-1.42 billion tons by 2030.
